A child's first visit to the dentist
A child's first visit to the dentist Your child's first visit to the dentist is as important as their first words or first steps. By starting dental visits at an early age, you will help your child build a lifetime of good dental habits. A child's introduction to professional dental care ideally should take place between six and twelve months of age. The earlier you begin, the better chance your dentist has to prevent problems. During the first dental visit, the dentist will examine your child's mouth, teeth, and gums for any signs of tooth decay or other problems. X-rays may be taken to see whether the facial bones and teeth are developing properly and to find hidden decay. The teeth may be cleaned if necessary. Before going to the dentist, talk about the visit with your child in a positive, matter-of-fact way. Tell your child that the dentist is a friendly doctor who will help him or her stay healthy. Hands down, the best kind of dental care is preventive.
