Below are several lesson plans that support Indiana Department of Education curriculum guidelines for elementary grades 4 and 5. This cross-curricular site is for school nurses, teachers and home school lesson plans.

We are taking this campaign directly to grades 4 and 5 because this age-group is receptive to scientific inquiry and will benefit the most over their lifetimes. It is our hope this campaign will expand to middle school and high school students, parent-teacher organizations, coaches and other health professionals.

Fourth graders compare the acidity of common drinks with pH strips.
ACID is a new concept, not only for these students, but for many of their parents, coaches and teachers. They know what sugar is, and what carbonation is and what decay is. The lessons will teach them about acid, and how acidic drinks can destroy teeth.

It is our goal to reach all 1,048 public and private elementary schools in Indiana with the help of Indiana Dental Association member volunteers. All classes that complete Lessons One and Two (below) are eligible for a drawing for classroom supplies. To learn more about the contests, see below.

Lesson 1: The Disappearing Egg

Students place hard-boiled eggs into various solutions overnight.

General Goals:
  • Students will compare the acidic effect of liquids on an egg’s shell
  • Students will rank the acidity of the liquids
  • Students will predict the effect of acidic beverages on teeth

Lesson 2: Drinks that Destroy Teeth

  • Students will determine the pH of various liquids using pH paper
  • Students will compare the sugar content in drinks to the acidity of the drinks
