Fair Dental Care Act

UPDATED: 1/26/12

The IDA's Fair Dental Care Act (SB 303) is authored by Sen. Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) and has been assigned to the Senate Health & Provider Services Committee chaired by Sen. Patricia Miller (R-Indianapolis).

What the Act Proposes

For years, insurance companies and dental offices worked cooperatively to efficiently process patients’ claims.

The system benefited all parties involved: insurance companies were able to accurately process claims, patients received convenient payment, allowing them easy access to care; and dentists were promptly reimbursed for their services.

In recent years, some insurance companies have changed the rules, implementing burdensome claims procedures that create confusion and inconvenience for patients, sometimes interfering with their ability to receive all of the insurance benefits to which they are entitled.

Insurance companies should not be allowed to unfairly alter claims, unreasonably delay claims payments, or dictate the cost of procedures that they choose to not cover in their policy.

The Fair Dental Care/Claims Act addresses insurance company abuses in the following way:

Non-Covered Services

Dental PPOs (preferred provider organizations) will be prohibited from setting fees for dental procedures that are not covered by their policy.
