DEA Regulations
No Stamped Prescriptions for Hydrocodone

As of October 6, The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has reclassified hydrocodone combination products (HCPs) as Schedule II substances which are subject to tighter restrictions. (read more)  One such restriction is the prohibition of pre-printed prescriptions. According to the law:

The name of any controlled substance, as defined by IC 35-48-2, may not be preprinted on any prescription forms at any time before the prescription is being prepared and executed for presentation to the patient or the patient's agent. That includes, but is not limited to, such activities as typing prescriptions in anticipation of their need, and using a rubber stamp or other similar means which would accomplish the same end. Commercially printed forms containing names of controlled substances are also prohibited.
(Indiana Board of Pharmacy; 856 IAC 1-34-3; filed Jul 5, 1995, 9:45 a.m.: 18 IR 2783, eff Jan 1, 1996; readopted filed Nov 13, 2001, 3:55 p.m.: 25 IR 1330; readopted filed Oct 4, 2007, 3:33 p.m.: 20071031-IR-856070060RFA)

A list of Frequently Asked Questions on the HCP reclassification, including how it impacts practices, prescriptions and patients, is available in the IDA Member Center.

Please note, in order to prescribe Schedule II drugs, you must have a CSR license with Schedule II and/or Schedule II N designation. Instructions for verifying that your license has the proper designation are available in the IDA Member Center.

Medicare Enrollment
Medicare Enrollment FAQ

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services published a final rule in May that requires all eligible professionals-including dentists-who prescribe Part D covered drugs to either be enrolled in Medicare or to opt out of Medicare in order for those prescriptions to be covered under Part D.
If you treat Medicare beneficiaries (any patient 65 years and older) you must either enroll in the program or opt out in order for those patients to be reimbursed for their prescriptions with Part D drug plans. Additionally, if you refer your Medicare patients for specialty treatment, such as oral surgery, they will not be reimbursed for those services unless you have enrolled in or opted out of Medicare.

Please note, it is not necessary for you to enroll in Medicare for your patients to receive reimbursement; it is only necessary for you to take action by either enrolling or opting out no later than June 1, 2015.

This is a huge undertaking with an estimated budget of $250,000 and, more importantly, a need for 300 dentists. We are asking for your help! In order to reach our goal of 2,000 patients, we have three critical needs:

  1. We need volunteers. We have shifts and positions available on Friday and Saturday; you can serve for a half day, a full day, or even both days. It's easy to register as a volunteer. Simply visit
  2. We need money. Become a Friend of MOM with your tax deductible donation of only $1,000. Your name and your practice's name will be published at the IndianaMOM website, on our social media pages, and in other MOM publicity. Visit to make a fast and easy donation with your credit card or to get additional information.
  3. We need follow up care providers. After the event, some patients will require additional care. Please consider volunteering as a follow up care dentist. Call 800-562-5646.

We constantly hear stories of how fulfilling and satisfying overseas dental missionary trips are. Now you have the opportunity to participate in a homegrown dental missionary event right in your own home state.

Questions? Visit or call the IDA Central Office at 800-562-5646.
